For 2000 years, the Church has had it wrong. Mary, called Magdalene, was not the adulterous woman or repentant sinner they made her out to be, neither was she possessed of the devil. Instead, Mary, called Magdalene was the only one to have completed the full course of Jesus’ teachings and was initiated as co-equal partner and Beloved with Christ. It was to Mary whom Jesus first revealed his resurrected/Christed Self and it was Mary he commissioned to share the good news with the other disciples and who Jesus ordained to continue his work in his stead.
Unfortunately, the movement that became Christianity, could not uphold the idea of a woman as co-equal with Jesus, let alone equal with any man. As such, Mary was quickly set aside, in favor of the hierarchical/patriarchal norm. Peter became the leader of the Church, and Mary was condemned as a whore. In this, Mary and all women with her have suffered, not only at the hands of institutional Christianity, but also at the hands of a culture that could not embrace Jesus’ radical message of unifying and empowering love.
What happened to Mary in the unfolding creation of Christianity is what has happened to all women:
- Like Mary, we have been silenced.
- Like Mary, our gifts and knowledge written off as the ravings of emotional women.
- Like Mary, we have been condemned as the origin of original sin and abhorred as evil temptresses, prostitutes and whores.
- Like Mary, our power has been suppressed and we have been forced into positions of subservience beneath patriarchal fear-based domination.
- Like Mary, our sensitivities and emotional natures have been judged as “weak,” maligning the natural expressions of healthy femininity.
It is not only women who have suffered under the burdens placed upon the Magdalene, however. When we reject the Divine Feminine (which is present within all human beings, male and female alike), we reject half of the potential beauty and magnificence of our human nature.
The Temple of the Magdalene seeks to change all that, specifically, through the Magdalene Priestess Training.
