Help Buy Authentic Freedom Academy a Home!
This crowd-funding project began with a personal need and has expanded into a vision of re-creating the way we support and finance small businesses – especially those who are pioneers in their fields and working toward bringing forth new ways of doing business while serving the betterment of our world.
The personal need that I am currently facing is one shared by many small business owners – the need to purchase a home or building in which to operate their business. With the ever-tightening regulations on home mortgages and small-business loans, pioneering businesses such as my own are forced to find creative ways to fund their businesses. Crowd funding has become one such option.
Here is my story:
Since 2002, I have been self-employed as an educator, minister, spiritual counselor and hands-on healer (www.authenticfreedomacademy.com) – a pioneer in the integration of psychology, spirituality, healing, education and social change.
I offer a tremendous service to my students and clients, many of whom pay as they are able or don’t pay at all because of their life circumstances. If you are reading this post, you too have found value in the services that I freely offer to the world. While I could become a non-profit business, I have chosen not to for a variety of reasons. For the past four years, I have been working out of the home I am renting. This has worked out well for both my family and for the people I serve. The owner of the home has been happy to continue this arrangement, but is now facing their own life transition and wants to sell the house. So I am now faced with two options: BUY or MOVE.
I don’t want to move. This home is perfect for my business. My children love this home. And so do I. This home showed up for us in a very magical way (starting with a vision, then a heart-knowing, ending with a home); and I believe we are meant to stay here and continue to be stewards of this magical property which provides a welcoming place for my clients and students, and a nurturing environment for my family.
Here is where the idea of Crowd-funding comes in….inspired in part by the book The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer. As I am facing the looming deadline of BUY or MOVE OUT, I got to thinking. “I know a ton of people. If everyone I knew contributed just a little bit – $100.00 for example, I could easily buy this home.” So I’m asking for your help. Please consider making a donation to Authentic Freedom Academy so that we may purchase our home, securing our ability to continue sharing our services with the world and freeing us to do so even more generously.
Here are the details:
The appraised value of the home is $110,000.00
This is my fundraising goal!
$110,000.00 and the home will be mine free and clear and I will not beholden to any bank or financing company, thereby freeing me to more freely share my gifts for those who need them.
The Bigger Picture
My story reflects the dilemma of many small business owners – especially those who are pioneers in their field. What if crowd funding became the new way for small business owners to make significant purchases without paying the bank (or their credit cards) a ridiculous amount of interest? What if instead of the banks and credit card companies making money off OUR money, we supported each other? I know I would gladly contribute $100 or $50 to a friend who is trying to support the growth of their business. I might not be able to do it all the time….but I would help whenever and wherever I could. How about you? How many times have you gladly donated $25 or $100 to a GoFundMe campaign for a friend who fell on hard times or received an unpleasant medical diagnosis? How many times have you slid $100 into an envelope for a family who recently lost their parent? How about the family down the street who lost their home to a fire? All of these are examples of contributions made because of a tragedy. What if crowd funding became a way for us to support each other not only in the tragedies of our lives but also in the joys – the joys of supporting the germinating seeds of each other’s passions and the ways in which we are each individually called to give back to the world through our own unique gifts?
Here’s the Pitch
So, here’s the pitch – HELP support the services that I, Lauri Ann Lumby, provide to the community and to the world through Authentic Freedom Academy, my inspirational writings, courses, weekly services, weekly meditation newsletter, and my publishing efforts by contributing to this crowd funding campaign. Invite your friends and family to pitch in….(share it on Facebook, through your email, Twitter, etc. etc. etc. ) and then keep your eyes and ears open for other small business owners in need of your support. That’s it! Help Authentic Freedom Academy buy our home and become part of a new way of supporting each other in the fulfillment of our life’s purpose, passion and gifts, ultimately in service to the betterment of our world!
As my friend Ted Balser often says, “Please and Thank you!”
