The Meaning of Life

“Through compassionate listening and attentive presence, I partner with those longing for meaning, purpose and connectedness in their lives.”  Exploring the mission of Authentic Freedom Ministries.

The Meaning of Life

And just so you know, it has nothing to do with the movie of the same name by the crew of Monty Python….although that is one of the funniest movies EVER!  Meaning is an elusive experience and a difficult word to define because in truth, I believe meaning differs from person to person.  Or, as my teacher, Julie Tallard Johnson says, “We are the meaning makers.”  In other words, we are the ones that get to decide if, how and what is the meaning of our life experiences.  The search for meaning, however is universal as are the origin and destination of that search – and that brings me back to Monday’s blog about LONGING!

The Search for Meaning

Deep within each of us is a LONGING to have meaning, purpose and connectedness in our lives.  The origin of this longing, as we discussed on Monday is GOD.  Out of God’s love and compassion, we were implanted with the LONGING to come home – to God and to our original nature in love.  Out of this longing, we are compelled to SEARCH.  We want to understand the whys, hows, and whatfors of the human condition.  Why do bad things happen to good people?  Why is there suffering and pain?  Why do we have war, poverty, hunger in a world that is supposed to be abundant?  Etc. Etc. Etc.  The human condition is FILLED with unanswerable questions, but ones for which we seek the answers anyway.  We also want to know why we are here, why this life experience, why these people, what do I have to contribute, what do I have to offer, etc. etc. etc.  We are kind of like three year olds in this persistent longing to know WHY!?

Where the Search Leads Us

As we explore all of these questions, and seek out their answers, what we ultimately discover is that everyone has their own answer.  “Bad things happen to good people because that is their karma.”  “Bad things happen to good people because they are being punished by God for something bad their parents did.”  “Bad things happen to good people just because that is the nature of the human condition.”  Or in other words: STUFF HAPPENS.  As we come to realize the range of responses to this one simple question, we have to wonder, who is the ultimate authority here?  Who really knows the answer to that question?  Then we go back to what my teacher Julie Tallard Johnson says, “We are the meaning makers.”  The ultimate authority is US……when we bring these questions to our heart, into our gut, what does it say?  Do we really believe that innocent people suffer because of an angry and vengeful God?  Do we really believe that we experience bad things because of something bad we did to another or because of the actions of our parents?  or….Do we simply believe this to be part of the human condition and has nothing to do with punishment?  WE decide what resonates as truth for us.  We apply the meaning that feels right to us.

But Where Does God Fit In?

Were you afraid I forgot about God?  No way Jose’ .   God IS the “us”.  That place within that determines truth – our heart and our gut…..is God.   It is the indwelling aspect of God through which we discern and exercise truth.  So when we ask the questions, seek the answers outside of ourselves, and them bring them inward to weight their truth, we are really consulting God.  At least that is my belief (and I get to believe this is true because I am the meaning maker in my own life!)  To bring this full circle, God plants the longing within us to search for meaning and in our search, what we ultimately find is God.  God is brilliant?
