40 Days in the Desert

Today’s blog explores the process of divorce in the journey of spiritual growth and the invitation to enter into the spiritual desert.

Moving through this transition of divorce has brought up surprise after surprise after surprise.  On March 15th (I know, “Beware the ides of March”), I moved from my home of 12 years into a new temporary living situation.  Making this transition has presented many unexpected surprises and unanticipated challenges.  On Sunday, March 20th while contemplating these unexpected challenges during yoga class, I heard the following words:

“40 days in the desert.”

HHHMMM….hearing these words immediately brought to mind the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert.  The story, as it is told in the Christian scripture, is that Jesus, when confronted with his Divine call, fled to the desert for a time of personal retreat, fasting, prayer and that during this time he was tempted by the inner obstacles to his spiritual freedom and to his ministry (as represented by the figure of “Satan” – which means obstacle or adversary).

So, I guess I have entered into my own desert time.  So, what comes with being in the desert?

  • Discomfort.
  • A Change in routine.
  • A foreign environment and atmosphere.
  • An end to what we have known and thought we knew.
  • Potential dangers
  • An opportunity to come face to face with fears, illusions, false perceptions
  • An opportunity to explore your truth and to face the temptations to doubt your truth
  • A feeling of being lost and without direction
  • A lack of landmarks
  • Exposure to the elements
  • An invitation to be cautious of the environment, the potential dangers, etc.
  • An invitation to be watchful but also to trust

I image that these are the same struggles Jesus faced during this time in the desert and are the same struggles we all face when we are invited (or seemingly forced) into our own desert time.  In the desert, we are really without the usual supports, securities, etc. that we are used to and are tempted to think that we are alone in this time of desert solitude.  If we look to scripture, however, we are reminded that during his time in the desert, Jesus was not alone.  Scripture tells us that he was ministered to by the angels.  I find comfort in this as I face my own desert time.  In this, I am being invited to trust in Divine providence and to trust that even in this God is here, ministering to me.  I also find comfort in the knowledge that the desert does not last forever.  If the words of the Divine that spoke to me in yoga are to be taken as truth, then my time in the desert will be but 40 days.  And the coolest thing??   40 days from the ides of March is EASTER SUNDAY!   How appropriate!

When have you been called to enter into your own desert experience?

Where did you find strength and comfort?

What was the new life you found on the other side of the desert?

Subj: The Infinite Unfolding Of Our Secret Name IN Christ

The Wilderness of Fasting: Into The Wonders of The Nameless I Am

The parallels of Christ in the wilderness 40 days,is identified with the children of Israel wandering 40 years in the wilderness before crossing the Jordan river into the Promised Land, symbolic of
ceasing from dead works into entering the Sabbath rest of the completion of works and into the perfect peace of the finished works of Christ on the cross, complete, from the foundations of the world,of “the lamb slain, perfecting in our hearts the completion of our salvation, and the gift of Innocence in Spirit and Truth.
In the wilderness,we fast from words, thoughts, and images of any meaning of life or God,so that the Spiritual Reality of the Nameless Silence of the Word of the I Am of God might be revealed in our hearts in the Infinite expression of Spirit and Truth’s freedom from all illusion of error from the ego’s futile fight of the knowledge of good and evil into the Light of Christ’s Wholeness within. Even our own name, all meaning, and ego itself, become mere empty mirages,as
even the homeless testify of,that we might discover, within, our Spiritual Self’s secret name hidden in Christ
with God,Infinitely unfolding, born of the”Father of Lights”in Christ, that is too Wonderful for word’s,thoughts, and Images. Born into Our New, inseparable,Creation of Spirit, out of the bare empty void, into the
powerful non-judgmental gift of Innocence and Wholeness of Christ, born of Spirit, with no need to judge anymore, not even ourselves. For that would be judging the Incorruptible Seed of Christ, sown in our hearts through His death and resurrection for all! Even the physical Image of Christ’s touch has passed from view that the Spirit
might come into the reality of our
heart’s new Wonderful infinitely unfolding new name in the Christ’s
    Spirit.
In the wilderness,or desert,of bareness, all is laid bare of our ideas of God,and of ourselves. Fortune, fame, and name lose all meaning in our poverty of spirit, and we become pure in heart, seeing God,and the Kingdom of Heaven in our midst by the Holy Spirit’s Living Waters springing up from our midst, quenching all thirst, unto everlasting life in Christ, revealing our new inheritance of the Son’s and Daughters of Light hidden in Christ with God! We go from shadow to Substance. Our days of futile, fruitless, shadow boxing of good and evil are over. The ego loses its grips on us in this Light dispelling all illusion of our separateness from the ever increasing Glory of God in the Face of Christ’s inseparable love for us in God,Immanuel,in our midst! Not of the world system, seeking God out there somewhere, even in a journey to the furthest reaches of the universe, and beyond, but into the inward journey of Infinite inner
space, and seemingly inexhaustible outer space, only a reflection of that within, where God is in the midst, One in the inner connectiveness of all creation as a whole, but in it’s midst, as in ours, animating all things through Christ His expressed Word.
Therefore we fast in our Sacred union of faith in our heart’s meditations of God from word’s that encourage any thought’s or images
of the mere knowledge of good and evil,in the ego, using, instead’
only affirmations of simplicity as we await the Infinite depths of God’s peace passing understanding in Christ to break forth in Infinite Springs of Living Waters of the Holy Spirits Selfless love for us,filling our consciousness in ever greater Infinite depths of the unknown I Am, in the Holy language of God’s
Silence. As Christ put it,”I go ahead of you to prepare a place
for you of many mansions,or dimensions, that where I Am,you may be also”. We then find,in this
“Cloud of Unknowing”,our wilderness blossoms forth like the
    Garden of Eden,or Paradise!
As we may fold our hands together
    in meditation,or placing them flat
down on our laps,in our silence of breath, the Christ that has passed
out of view is felt to be holding us
intimately in our inner risen Self with Him in the most precious everlasting
love! If that isn’t touching, what is?
    Sincerely,Jay P. Raeder
