With all my heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commands.
My soul is consumed with longing for your ordinances at all times.
The way of truth I have chosen; I have set your ordinances before me.
Behold, I long for your precepts; in your justice give me life.
I gasp with open mouth in my yearning for your commands.
Planted deep within our hearts is the desire to return to the recollection of our Oneness with the Divine and with one another. This desire compels us to seek to know God and in knowing God, to know ourselves. This is the search that is referred to in the words of the psalmist above, “my soul is consumed with longing.” It is through longing that we know we are called on this search. The challenge is that we frequently confuse the object of this longing and find ourselves looking for things outside of us to quench these unfulfilled desires. We seek satisfaction through money, power, status, relationship, sex, food, alcohol, control, material acquisitions, etc. etc. etc. The only satisfaction to this longing we feel within is God. When we gather this longing to ourselves and bring it to the search for the Divine, it is here that true satisfaction and fulfillment are obtained. It is only in remembering our Oneness with the Divine and through the Divine with one another and all of creation that we shall find contentment, peace, freedom, compassion and joy.
What is the longing in your heart?
How have you sought to have that longing fulfilled?
How are you being called to direct that longing toward your own search for Divine truth?
